J’ai toujours été séduit par le rendu si spécifique d’une photo Polaroid. De plus, l’usage de cet appareil – ici un Polaroid 600 OneStep – déclenchait chez moi une gaîté à la fois ludique et attentive. Ludique car le maniement du OneStep était simple et l’objet solide, attentive aussi car l’appareil n’excluait ni la maîtrise du cadre, ni la subtilité de la lumière. En effet, les scènes à forte dynamique et les environnements contrastés requéraient une bonne gestion des limites techniques de l’outil.

Aussi, après avoir appuyé sur le déclencheur, la photo se développait sous mes yeux instantanément, défiant l’impatience. Je tenais enfin entre les mains un objet tangible et un cliché unique : l’image d’une empreinte transcendée du réel. 

 

J’aime les couleurs singulières des photos Polaroid tout autant que leur texture, résolution et netteté inhabituelles. Ce rendu unique captive mon œil et je continue à penser que l’esthétique distinctive des Polaroid leur confère une âme et un envoûtement propres.

 

Les photos présentes dans cette brochure ont été réalisées entre 1989 et 2008, date à laquelle Polaroid Corporation, l’entreprise fondatrice, a fermé ses dernières usines de films instantanés.

I have always been drawn to the distinctive rendering of Polaroid photographs. Using this camera—here, a Polaroid 600 OneStep—brought me a feeling that was both playful and attentive. Playful, because the OneStep was simple to handle and reassuringly solid; attentive, because it still demanded care in framing and a sensitivity to light. Scenes with strong contrasts or wide tonal ranges required an awareness of the camera’s technical limits.

 

After pressing the shutter, the image revealed itself almost immediately, unfolding before my eyes and gently testing my impatience. I would then hold in my hands a tangible object, a singular image: the trace of reality, transformed.

 

I am as attached to the singular colors of Polaroid photographs as I am to their unusual texture, resolution, and sharpness. This distinctive rendering continues to captivate my eye, and I believe that the unique aesthetics of Polaroids endow them with a presence of their own—an aura, a quiet enchantment.

 

The photographs presented in this brochure were taken between 1989 and 2008, the year Polaroid Corporation, the founding company, closed its last instant film factories.
